What will you study?

The Applied Science course equips you with a variety of different skills and a wide science knowledge base spanning biology, chemistry and physics, giving an excellent foundation for many university courses, jobs or apprenticeships. It is essential that you are well organised and can meet deadlines. The course is designed for learners who are interested in learning about the science sector alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a range of higher education courses. Lessons are taught in specialist laboratories with access to equipment which enables you to develop your practical skills. This qualification will provide learners with a broad understanding of vocationally-related sciences to support progress to higher education. It is suitable for studying alongside substantial academic science qualifications, such as A-level sciences. Studying this qualification will enable learners to develop their knowledge and understanding of scientific principles, as well as those scientific practical skills recognised by higher education institutions and employers to be most important. The qualification also offers learners an opportunity to develop transferable skills such as problem-solving, research and communication as part of their applied learning. The Extended Certificate in Applied Science (1 A-level equivalent) is designed to be studied alongside two other Level 3 courses over 2 years.

Future pathways

This is an excellent qualification to have and is a fantastic base for those wishing to progress onto Higher Education courses in Healthcare, including Biomedical Science, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science, Pharmacology, Physiotherapy, Audiology, Nursing, Radiography, and Optometry. It could also be beneficial for progression onto a degree in Engineering or Finance and Accounting.
